Ever wonder what it takes to make a city? Here is a wonderful history of the city I was born in and how it came about. This is only the first part of the history and its people, along with how vital it is not just to this state, but the world since this is a great agricultural area.
Baker Field The Making of a City eBook Jennifer Burlock
It is a short book that you can finish in an afternoon, and primarily looks at Col Thomas Baker. It tells the general story of Baker's past, his arrival in California, and the brief period after the Civil War where he lines up the city streets and divisions of the town. As much positive as the book is....it lacks three things.1. It only covers this period up to the 1870s and doesn't cover the period between now and then. There's a lot of history that simply wasn't put into it. 2. It covers Baker's two wives, but little about where they came from or their history. 3. There are a couple of other major people of the period put into the prospective, but dozens of others are left out. My general view is that the book is a good start but if you want more....you need to dig into other publications or do more research.

Baker Field The Making of a City eBook Jennifer Burlock Reviews
Very nice story about how the city was created, and some of the things that went on during their lives.
Having lived in Southern CA for many years and having been to Kern County and Bakersfield numerous times, I thought I knew about the places I visited, but this fact filled little book gave me new information that I hadn't known before. The story of the founding of Bakersfield is as much story about the man it is named for as it is about the city, but then History is about the people who lived in the places as much as it is about the places themselves.
Written in a conversational tone, this is easier to read than conventional history books. This book would benefit those who want a fast read about Kern County and the beginnings of those settling in the area.
